About this Club
A small band of enthusiasts got together in 1961 and formed the Birmingham Branch of the Gatlinburg Ski Club. Dr. Tom Brigham, local dentist, known as the father of southern skiing was elected President. In 1962, with Percy Perkins as President, the group adopted the name “Birmingham Ski Club.” The “big” trip for that year was to Cataloochie, North Carolina with members of the Comer Class of the Highlands Methodist Church and others who liked to do something different.

The Club made another trip to Cataloochie in 1963 and during this season, began holding regular meetings at the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce building. Ambition for greater things arose in 1964 and work began on incorporating the Club along with multiple bus trips to Cataloochie and Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

The Birmingham Ski Club, Inc. was incorporated in January 1965 and in March; the first charter took off in full glory for Aspen, Colorado. The Club has made one or more flights in each subsequent year.

The Club has enjoyed phenomenal membership growth and has skied throughout the world with trips to several resorts in the Western United States, Canada, Europe and the Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains. Many of our members ski several resorts each year and recommend new locations for Club sponsorship.

Now in its 47th year, the Club’s membership has expanded to national proportions while retaining its warm atmosphere of Southern hospitality. The Club features a wide range of activities designed to promote skiing and ski safety, including regularly scheduled meetings, hikes, racing programs, social events, tennis, golf, white water rafting and other activities for the enjoyment of the membership.

Area Served
We have members in 24 States and Canada, but our membership is primarily the Birmingham area and surrounding cities in Alabama.

Meetings
Member Meetings are scheduled for one of our Friday Night functions where we have a short business meeting. Trip leaders talk about their trips and availability on their trips. We then socialize, and dance to DJ's music and enjoy fellowshiping with members and prospective members. We meet at the Kelly Ingram VFW in downtown Birmingham. This gives us an opportunity to gather with friends, prospective new members and also support our Veterans by gathering at their facility. This Friday Night function is annouced in our Newsletter and on our Website each month. This is not the same Friday Night each month so check our Website to see which Friday Night we will be meeting at the VFW. We would like to extend a warm welcome to come and join us.

Trips & Events
"Friday Night Flights" are weekly events that get people together to meet and socialize. Events like this are orchestrated to help people get to know each other so they will have the feeling of belonging and not worry about going on a trip with a group of strangers. Fall and spring beach trips to the Gulf are typically offered each year, or a short cruise. There is also a Pool, a Lake, a late Summer party, Christmas or New Year's Eve party, Halloween, and End-of the Year (President's Ball) parties. We offer many varied opportunities for our members to get together and socialize. There are also six monthly member's meetings with guest speakers during the year.
